New Life Wesleyan Church’s History

The Pilgrim Holiness Church, Greensboro Wesleyan Church, now known as the New Life Wesleyan Church of Greensboro Maryland, was organized on Friday evening March 20, 1936 by Delmarva District Superintendent Rev. P.F. Eliot of Dover Delaware. The following were elected officers by open ballot: Rev. Alfred Clark, Pastor; Walter Joiner, Secretary; Walter Raver, Treasurer; Francis Tribbett, Deaconess; Carville Tribbett, Deacon. The others who became members on that date were, Susan Anthony, Ida Hudson, John Baynard, Elizabeth Clark and Allan Clark. These charter members began meeting in the old Methodist Protestant Church building which stood on the corner of Main Street and Cedar Lane.

Rev. and Mrs. Alfred Clark pastored the church from 1936 to 1943, Rev. and Mrs. Victor Bateman from 1943 to 1945 and Rev. T.S. Dixon from 1945 to 1951. Rev. and Mrs. Harley McKee then came on as supply pastors from 1951 to 1952, until Rev. and Mrs. Linwood Horseman Came from 1952 to 1955. The Horseman’s often sang specials together and he was noted for his humor and his great ability to write poems.

Rev. and Mrs. Liston Moyer pastored from 1955 to 1957 and the old Methodist Protestant building in which they had worshiped was condemned. In August 1956, the Pilgrim Holiness congregation purchased an undeveloped field from Dr. Alden Eash for $1,000.00. On November 28, 1956 the congregation began meeting in Pocahontas Hall which was on Sunset Ave., East. On January 6, 1957 ground was broken on the newly purchased lot by Delmarva District Superintendent Rev. John Abbott, Pastor Liston Moyer, William Quillan and Sarah Jacobs.

Rev. and Mrs. Roy Dorsett came to pastor from 1957 to 1958. On September 13, 1957 earth-moving equipment began work at the new site. The first service held in the new building was held on June 22, 1958. Rev. Dorsett shared his talents of singing and chalk artistry.

Rev. and Mrs. H.D. Dukes, former Delmarva district superintendent, pastored from 1958 to 1971. A dedication was held at the new building on November 2, 1958, with Dr. J.D. Abbott bringing the message. Rev. Dukes oversaw the purchase of the Parsonage on the corner of Church and Main streets. He was a wonderful preacher and Mrs. Dukes was a dynamic force in biblical knowledge and had great teaching abilities.

Rev. and Mrs. Newell Reed pastored from 1971 to 1980. They worked with the Youth and Children’s ministries. Also Mrs. Reed directed the choir and taught music lessons. Rev. Reed was a wonderful preacher and he started the nursing home ministries.

Rev. Barry Miller and family lead from 1982 to 1991. They were dynamic in preaching and musical abilities. The Church continued improving the parsonage and church facilities. The church watched the Miller family grow and mature. The family was instrumental in helping the church grow spiritually and they were a true blessing.

Rev. and Mrs. Bruce Lecates joined the Church in 1991 and pastored until retiring in 2006. Rev. Bruce Lecates taught the true word and helped the Church move into the existing building, New Life Wesleyan. What a project, but God provided. Mrs. Lecates is a wonderful Sunday School teacher and a great music director. She played the organ and loved missions.

Pastor Ward Messick and his wife Mettie pastored New Life Wesleyan Church from 2006 to 2008. Pastor Messick was the youngest pastor at New Life Wesleyan. His wife Mettie was a very talented musician.

Pastor Bruce and Susan Smart joined New Life Wesleyan in 2008 and are curently pastoring today. Pastor Bruce has a passion preaching God’s word. He also has a real heart for the community. Pastor Bruce’s wife Susan is serving as the administrative assistant. They both truly love New Life Wesleyan Church. In 2009 the Lord enabled Pastor Bruce to add Rev. Alfred Flatten and his wife, Judy, to our staff as Pastors of Discipleship. Pastor Fred is very musically talented and leads our praise team. Pastor Fred has a heart and true gift for teaching and growing disciples in God’s word and is the author of many discipleship type books. Judy makes everyone’s day with her extraordinarily wonderful smile and joyous personality. Judy also loves makes beautiful handmade cards.
